Former Minister of Power Adebayo Adelabu reportedly stepped down from his position despite reluctance from President Bola Tinubu, who is said to have preferred he remain in the cabinet.
Adelabu officially submitted his resignation in a letter dated April 22, 2026, as he moves to pursue his governorship ambition in Oyo State ahead of the 2027 elections. His exit followed a directive by the president asking political appointees with electoral ambitions to resign, although sources say Tinubu had hoped Adelabu would delay or reconsider his decision.
According to insiders, the president had even considered Adelabu for a potential role as Minister of Finance and Coordinating Minister of the Economy, indicating confidence in his performance. It was also gathered that Tinubu sent intermediaries to persuade him not to resign.
During a final meeting at the Presidential Villa, Tinubu reportedly asked Adelabu about his chances in the Oyo governorship race. After receiving a confident response, the president wished him well and allowed him to proceed with his political plans.
Sources within government circles said Tinubu had consistently defended Adelabu’s handling of the power sector, despite public concerns over issues such as grid instability and rising electricity tariffs. They noted that the president viewed the sector’s challenges as systemic rather than the responsibility of one individual.
Allies of the former minister also maintained that his resignation followed due consultation and respect for the president, adding that he briefed Tinubu on his stewardship before leaving office.
Adelabu’s exit is expected to intensify political activities in Oyo State, where he is positioning himself as a key contender in the upcoming governorship race.
