Bayo Adelabu has officially resigned from his position in the cabinet of President Bola Tinubu, with his exit set to take effect on April 30, 2026.
The Presidency confirmed receiving his resignation letter, dated April 22, 2026, in which Adelabu stated that he stepped down to focus on his governorship ambition in Oyo State.
In the letter, Adelabu said his decision aligns with a long-standing political goal, noting that his ambition to lead Oyo State dates back to 2016. He also recalled resigning as Deputy Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria in 2018 as part of that same pursuit.
He expressed gratitude to President Tinubu for the opportunity to serve, describing his tenure as significant and highlighting the importance of the power sector to Nigeria’s economic growth and industrial development.
Adelabu added that his early resignation is intended to ensure a smooth transition within the ministry, allowing for proper handover of responsibilities.
His exit is expected to intensify political activities in Oyo State ahead of the next governorship election, with analysts suggesting his candidacy could reshape alliances in the state.
During his time in office, Adelabu oversaw efforts to stabilise Nigeria’s power sector, which continues to face challenges such as generation shortfalls, transmission limitations, and distribution inefficiencies.
No official replacement has been announced, though an interim arrangement is expected pending the appointment of a substantive minister.
