Mohammed Lele, Nigeria’s ambassador-designate to Algeria, has died.
In a statement, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs spokesperson, Kimiebi Ebienfa, said Lele passed away in the early hours of April 19 in Ankara after a prolonged illness.
Lele was recently appointed by President Bola Tinubu as part of a broader list of ambassadorial nominations.
Until his death, he served as director overseeing the Middle East and Gulf Division at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
Born in Gamawa, Bauchi State, in 1976, Lele studied Economics at Bayero University Kano and joined the Nigerian Foreign Service in 2001. During his career, he served in diplomatic missions in Berlin, Lomé, and Riyadh.
The ministry described him as a dedicated and highly skilled diplomat whose contributions to Nigeria’s foreign policy were significant.
His remains were received in Abuja by the Permanent Secretary of the ministry, Dunoma Ahmed, before being transported for burial.
Lele was laid to rest on April 22 in Kano in accordance with Islamic rites.
The ministry extended condolences to his family, associates, and the government and people of Bauchi State, describing his death as a major loss to Nigeria’s diplomatic community.
