It was a ground breaking operation for two medical graduates of Ladoke Akintola University of Technology, Ogbomosho, Bamidele Adebayo and Adetunbi Babatunde when they set a milestone record for successfully carrying out a 12 hour brain tumor surgery which was first of its kind in Ogun state.

The operation, which was conducted at the Federal Medical Centre, Idi-Aba in Abeokuta removed completely the tumor in a 57-year old transporter who reportedly has brain disorder due to self-medication.

It was gathered that the surgery which was led by the two neuro-surgeon consultants was a 12 hour marathon operation where series of brain tumors were removed from the patient.

Speaking with the two neuro-surgeon consultants after the successful operation of the brain, they described the experience as daunting, but, rewarding.

They added that the successful brain-open surgery was effected because of the facilities the hospital has provided for brain surgery operations.

The consultants however promised to do more of such operations in the nearest future, saying "the medical centre is a promising hospital for brain surgery operation".

According to Adebayo, "It is a daunting experience, but, also rewarding, daunting in the sense that being the first brain tumor surgery in this hospital, it took a lot of organization and jumping a lot of hurdles before we were able to achieve that".

“The fact that the theater staff are doing that for the very first time was a brilliant task, there were times we felt like oh why did we do this and all other issues were there, but, by and large we were able to get the tumor out".

“We were exhausted, but, we are happy that we were able to get the tumor out completely, and the patient has improved significantly after the surgery".

“The scan we did after the surgery showed that there is no little of the tumor in the brain, he is very fine, I feel happy and fulfilled".

“I will say that the MD, Prof. Musa Olomu is a very loving and caring person who has made a lot of changes in this hospital and I would say that this is a very promising hospital and we hope a lot of things will happen here since we are strategically located”.

Also, his partner, Adetunbi advised the people to restrain from self-medication and treatment.

He urged the public to always consult medical practitioners before taking drugs or injection when they are sick.

He said, “I would advise people to refrain from self-medication and self-treatment, they should try to see their general practitioner who will direct them to the appropriate specialist.

“It was a cool experience, we are used to it, we are used to 18, 24 hours operations, but, it is quite interesting in operating 12 hours in Abeokuta for the first time.

“We have actually been operating brain patient in Abeokuta, but, this will be the first brain tumor that would be done and it is quite interesting that it was done successfully.

“I feel good and I feel we can do more if we get more, I want the federal government to put more resources in treatment of patient so as to achieve best result.”

Meanwhile, the 57-year old transporter, Sunday Ogunkola commended the Neuro-surgeons and the management of FMC Abeokuta for ensuing that the tumor was removed from his brain.

Ogunkola claimed that self-medication and treatment led to the tumor, urging the people to desist from it.

He added, “I don’t know how I got here, but, I want to appreciate God for a successful operation. God used his hand through the surgeons to remove the turmoil from my brain and I commend the surgeons for a successful operation.

“You cannot be wiser than the medical practitioners, when you have problem with you brain, you must ensure you consult them.

“I am appealing to the people to desist from self-medication and treatment because the damages it is causing to our health might be beyond control”.

Ogun: Amosun, Abiodun in last-minute battle

The hostility between the outgoing Governor of Ogun State, Ibikunle Amosun and the Governor-elect of the state, Prince Dapo Abiodun, intensifies ahead of the May 29 handover date, KUNLE OLAYENI reports

As Governor Ibikunle Amosun prepares to hand over the baton of governance in Ogun State, there is no let-up in the rift between him and the Governor-elect, Dapo Abiodun.

The no love lost appears to have constrained the transition period and from all indications, it would be a fight to the finish by the camps of the two gladiators.

In the run-up to May 29, the governor and his successor-to-be are locked in a tussle over “last minute” appointments and transactions by the outgoing administration.

The development has further stoked tension even as both divides continued to fight each other at the election petitions tribunal over the outcome of the March 9 governorship election in the state.

Amosun supported the Allied People’s Movement (APM) gubernatorial candidate, Adekunle Akinlade, in the election but Abiodun, who ran on the ticket of All Progressives Congress (APC), defeated the governor’s anointed to emerge victorious at the polls.

The APC candidate is widely believed to have been backed by the Vice President Yemi Osinbajo, former Lagos State governor; National Leader of APC, Asiwaju Bola Tinubu and former governors of Ogun State – Chief Olusegun Osoba and Otunba Gbenga Daniel – an alliance which dealt a big blow to the succession plans of the incumbent governor.

However, few days to vacate office, Amosun has come under fire over alleged heavy withdrawals from the state treasury, award of contracts, mass recruitment into the civil service and installation of traditional rulers.

Loyalists of the Governor-elect considered the decisions of the outgoing governor as a deliberate ploy to put in place financial landmines and booby traps for the incoming government.

Consequently, they are warning against actions that could unnecessarily balloon the state’s wage bill and undermine the next administration.

Some of the recent “contentious decisions” of the Amosun government include the appointments of 21 new permanent secretaries as well as management and Governing Councils for Moshood Abiola University of Science and Technology (MAUSTECH) and Ogun State Polytechnic, Ipokia.

The two institutions, for instance, had yet to take off. A worried APC chieftain observed that appointing a Vice Chancellor and inaugurating a Governing Council for a university that is yet to take off and has no students, is a deliberate attempt to incur unnecessary financial burden on the next government.

The party chieftain also bemoaned the appointments of a Rector and Governing Council for the Ogun State Polytechnic, Ipokia, when the Moshood Abiola Polytechnic (MAPOLY), Abeokuta, was experiencing uncertainty.

Also, the outgoing government announced new General Managers for both Ogun State Broadcasting Corporation (OGBC) and Ogun State Television (OGTV), despite the fact that they had been in acting capacities for almost a year.

Abiodun’s supporters kicked, insisting that the appointments were done in bad faith and must be reviewed upon assumption of office. Some of them recalled how Amosun relieved many permanent secretaries inherited from his predecessor of their appointments, stressing that similar action should not be unexpected.

At the May Day celebration held at the MKO Abiola International Stadium, Abeokuta, Amosun defended his administration’s recruitment into the civil service, saying it followed due process. No fewer than 1,000 workers were recently employed.

According to the governor, the latest recruitment was carried out via the Public Service Entry Examination conducted by the Administrative Staff College of Nigeria (ASCON) early last year.

His words: “The newly recruited staff is not a Kangaroo recruitment. These are people that sat for the exam almost a year back and the procedures were followed; not that Amosun just woke up one day and said because I am leaving, I will bring in more people.

“These are the people that wrote ASCON exam since early last year. We just took 1,000 from them. If we are to pick all that wrote the exam, we may probably say we want to pick 5,000. We picked 1,000 from those that sat for the ASCON exam.We have given them their (appointment) letters.”

Besides, the governor promised to offset unpaid deductions, leave bonuses, gratuities and some outstanding financial obligations to civil servants in the state.

He specifically said the state government would commit the sum of N20.2billion to offset outstanding deductions and the April salary of workers.

Amosun expressed satisfaction that he was leaving the state as governor better than he met it. His camp maintained that the business of governance cannot be halted on account of transition.

The governor went further to elevate 75 village chiefs, otherwise known as Baale, to Coronet Obas. Other monarchs are billed for installation and appointment in coming days.

This, of course, would increase the number of traditional rulers in the state currently at 245.

Amosun said his decision was part of efforts to enhance grassroots development and sustainability of the developmental strides being witnessed in the state.

But Abiodun’s loyalists are not persuaded. They argued that “hurried transactions” would not necessarily be binding on the incoming administration. Some of them are of the opinion that the incumbent should be preparing its handover notes for a smooth transition instead of digging pits for the incoming government.

Spokesman of the APC Caretaker Committee, Tunde Oladunjoye, while commenting on the development, declared that all loans, overdraft and financial obligations that do not follow due process, including the approval of the Ogun State House of Assembly, would not be honoured by the next administration.

He, therefore, cautioned financial institutions from granting loans, overdrafts and other financial instruments to the outgoing government

In a statement he recently issued, Oladunjoye said Abiodun will review all the last minute appointments and contracts carried out by Amosun. He contended that it was morally unacceptable for the governor, at the twilight of his government, to be embarking on mass appointments and committing the incoming administration to unsustainable financial obligations.

He pointed out that all appointments, installation of traditional rulers, contracts, commitments and obligations entered into during the transition period after the elections will be reviewed.

Oladunjoye said: “Though a Joint Transition Committee of the incumbent and incoming governments has been set up, Senator Amosun has made last-minute appointments and awarded contracts without due consideration to the incoming administration of Prince Dapo Abiodun.

“Whilst we accept that the term of this government expires on May 29, 2019, it is morally unacceptable that a governor with less than one month to the expiration of his term in office will make mass appointments and promotions, thereby committing the incoming administration to unsustainable financial commitments and obligations.

“We hereby alert the general public and those to whom it may concern that all appointments, installation of traditional rulers, contracts, commitments and obligations entered into during the transition period after the elections will be reviewed and may not be binding on the new administration.”

As the face-off deepened, Abiodun’s camp raised the alarm that the Amosun administration denied it access to some state-owned facilities for inspection. The facilities include the Valley View Auditorium, Presidential Lodge, MITROS Residences, June 12 Cultural Centre and MKO Abiola Stadium.

But the Secretary to the State Government (SSG), Taiwo Adeoluwa, denied the allegation, saying the facilities were being used for government business.

Adeoluwa explained that the state was preparing for the working visit of President Buhari to the state and would need the key state-owned facilities.

“Understandably, all hands are on the deck and most of the named state facilities will be in use. During the month of Ramadan, the state organises and engages in a number of daily programmes, culminating in the state’s special Iftar for which we routinely use many of the named facilities,” he said.

Also speaking, Amosun’s Special Adviser on Information and Strategy, Rotimi Durojaiye, said the allegation from the incoming administration was unfounded, distasteful and unsavoury.

His words: “The allegation that the outgoing government is denying the transition committee of the incoming government access to some state-owned facilities for inspection, is nothing, but another in a series of political propaganda to tarnish the image of Governor Amosun.

“This and other false allegations should be disregarded and ignored in their entirety as they are only meant to score cheap political points.”

Buhari is billed to visit the state on Saturday, May 25. The President will inaugurate some projects executed by the outgoing governor. However, the questions are: Will the presidential visit end the hostility or will the conflict be aggravated by the emerging politics of ministerial nomination? Not a few observers would be interested in how the ongoing cat and mouse game will eventually play out.

Senator Gbenga Ashafa argued that if the bill is considered, it would enhance the capability of the institution to achieve its objectives.

A bill seeking to upgrade Yaba college of Technology to university status has passed second reading in the Nigerian Senate chamber.

The bill, City University of Technology (Est., etc.) Yaba, which sought to transform Yaba College of Technology was okayed following a motion by Senator Gbenga Ashafa (APC-Lagos) at the plenary presided over by Senate President Bukola Saraki in Abuja.

Leading the debate, Ashafa, who represents Lagos East Senatorial District, argued that if the bill is considered, it would enhance the capability of the institution to achieve its objectives.

“Nigeria’s steady march towards education for all in the shortest possible time has taken a giant leap with the introduction of this bill.

“I am personally excited by the prospect of transforming this polytechnic to a university of technology because it will motivate both the students and the academic staff.

“It will also upgrade the facilities and enhance its capability to achieve its objectives.

“Similarly, the new university of technology will encourage the advancement of learning and hold out to all persons without distinction of race, creed, sex or political conviction the opportunity of acquiring a higher and liberal education,” he said.

The motion was unanimously adopted by the legislators.

Saraki, therefore, referred the bill to the Senate Committee on Tertiary Institutions and TETFUND for further legislative action and report back within a week.

…confirmed by the Police Council

The Inspector General of Police (IGP), Abubakar Adamu, has promised to re-organize the Police Force for efficiency and effectiveness. He said that was in order to face squarely issues of banditry, kidnapping, insurgency and general insecurity across the country. Adamu stated this shortly after being confirmed by the Police Council during its meeting presided over by President Muhammadu Buhari at the presidential villa, Abuja.

Adamu was appointed as acting IGP on January 15, 2019 to succeed Ibrahim Idris, who retired after the mandatory retirement age of 60 years. Speaking to State House Correspondents after the meeting, the IGP said he had briefed the council on the security situation in the country and the efforts the force was making in addressing the situation. According to him, they were satisfied with what “we are putting in place or have put in place to address the security challenges. After the presentation, I was confirmed as the IGP. “I was ushered in and I briefed the council on the security situation in the country and the efforts we are putting in place or have put in place to address the security challenges. After the presentation, I was confirmed as the IGP,” he noted.

The Police boss explained that his confirmation by the Police Council was a huge task to the entire force to put in more energy in helping to address the security situation in the country. He said: “What it means for us is that we have been given a huge task to make sure that we provide security within the country and make the country crimefree, which means that we have re-doubled our efforts.

“Whatever strategy we have put in place, we have to look at it, and restrategize day in, day out, to make sure that the insecurity in the country goes down to the barest minimum. We have to look at our strategy and re-strategize and also look at our personnel to re-organize the way our system is structured, identify the right personnel in the right places to have them do the job.

So, it requires re-strategizing for us to be able to dig deep into what is happening in the North West, so as to deal with the situation squarely.” Speaking further, Adamu noted that he was sure that the security agencies within the country were capable of dealing with the situation. “What we need to do is just to re-strategize and then face the criminals squarely.” The Nigeria Police Council is made up of 40 members, namely the President, the state governors, the IGP and the Chairman of the Police Service Commission. The current Chairman of the Council, Musiliu Smith, was also at the meeting with most of the governors also present.

Governor of Cross River State, Ben Ayade and the governor of Ekiti State, Kayode Fayemi, who were joined by the Special Adviser on Media and Publicity to the President, Femi Adesina, told reporters that all members in the council were unanimous that Adamu, in acting capacity, performed creditably. Section 28 of the same Constitution states the functions of the Council to include, amongst others, that “ the Nigeria Police Council shall include – (a) the organisation and administration of the Nigeria Police Force and all other matters relating thereto (not being matters relating to the use and operational control of the Force or the appointment, disciplinary control and dismissal of members of the Force); (b) the general supervision of the Nigeria Police Force; and (c) advising the President on the appointment of the Police.”

Thank you for not converting me to Islam - Amaechi to Buhari .

The Minister of Transportation, Rotimi Amaechi, on Wednesday, thanked Pres. Buhari for not converting him to Islam and for disappointing those who thought he had an agenda to Islamise Nigeria.

He stated this at the valedictory session of the Federal Executive Council. According to him: “Let me begin by thanking God for the opportunity Mr President has availed me to serve.

Mr President, I met you first in 2007. I had never seen you before because when you were the head of state I was a student in University of Ibadan, a radical one at that, a Marxist, so we were among those who demonstrated against some of your policies.

You recalled when you came to my chambers in 2007, I wished you good luck and you turned to me and said, don’t wish me good luck, wish me the best of luck.

Recall I told you, you are the best material to be President of Nigeria, but unfortunately the elites will not allow you to be president and I was in PDP.

Mr President, let me thank you for not converting me to Islam. I say that specifically because in 2014, when I walked into Christ the King Catholic Church, I was literally chased out of the church as a governor because I was accused of supporting a man whose agenda was to Islamize Nigeria.

And in Rivers State they began to call me Alhaji Rotimi Chibuike Amaechi. I thank you because they have dropped the Alhaji and back to Mr Chibuike Amaechi.

I was told in the cause of the campaign that you were autocratic and,

The disclosure was made by the Institution’s Vice Chancellor, Prof Idowu Olayinka, on Thursday in an address at the third stakeholders’ forum themed, “The State of the University”, which held at the multipurpose Hall, UI Alumni Association Centre on the campus of the institution.

The meeting was chaired by a legal luminary, Dr. Akin Onigbinde.

Olayinka said instead of 4,570 personnel, the university has on its employment a total of 2,736 staff which he said is not good enough for the institution.

He puts the staff strength at 1,490 academic staff, 456 senior technologists/ technical staff, 286 senior administrative staff, 196 senior secretarial staff, 155 junior technical staff, and 153 junior administrative staff.

According to the VC, there is a shortage of 374 academic staff, a shortage of 397 in the senior technologist cadre, a shortage of 931 in the junior technical staff cadre, and a shortage of 132 in the junior administrative staff category.

He noted that the current understaffing situation abated because of the difficulties being experienced in hiring new staff and placing them on the payroll with a number of staffs retiring, resigning and some others died.

However, he assured that the Federal Government has been contacted in Abuja on the shortfall so that the institution would employ more staff.

Olayinka said, “We currently have 1,490 academic staff, 456 senior technologists/ technical staff, 286 senior administrative staff, 196 senior secretarial staff, 155 junior technical staff, and 153 junior administrative staff.

“With a total student population of 30,105 in terms of the head count of full time students and a total full time equivalent of 32,228 and using the NUC (National University Commission) norm, there is a shortage of 374 academic staff, a shortage of 397 in the senior technologist cadre, a shortage of 931 in the junior technical staff cadre, and a shortage of 132 in the junior administrative staff category.

“The foregoing suggests that our staff are overworked, even while at the same time they are overworked, we cannot thank them enough for their patience and forbearance. We are making representation to the relevant authorities in Abuja so that we would be able to engage new staff, especially at the lower levels.”

“The university is currently understaffed as a result of difficulty being experienced in hiring new staff, and placing them on the payroll. A number of our colleagues are retiring, some have resigned, while unfortunately some died. On the other hand, the university has been expanding with the introduction of new academic programmes and departments.”

The VC also used the opportunity of the meeting to announce to the stakeholders that the 2018/2019 academic session would commence on Saturday June 15, 2019, adding that the new students should resume on the same day as orientation programme would start two days later.

He also said returning students would resume on Saturday June 22, while lectures for the new session would begin on June 24.

While speaking ahead of November convocation of the institution, Olayinka disclosed that about 207 students would graduate with first-class honours during the ceremony “even though many of them would have gone for their one-year mandatory National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) before the convocation ceremony.”

In a brief remarks, the Chairman of the occasion, Dr. Akin Onigbinde, enjoined UI to constantly continue to think out innovative ways of reinventing itself, and transforming itself for relevance and development, been a premier institution in the country.

Over 2, 295 teachers have been killed and 19, 000 displaced in Borno, Yobe and Adamawa in nine years, Minister of Education, Mallam Adamu Adamu, has said.

The minister said 1, 500 schools have been destroyed by Boko Haram since 2014.

According to him, this has resulted in 1, 280 casualties among teachers and students.

This, he explained, has contributed to the number of out-of-school children in the country.

The minister said: “The greatest challenge of the out-of-school, phenomenon in recent years has been the problem of insurgency. Since the inception of the insurgency in the North-East, education has been under constant and system attack resulting in the killing of both learners and teachers and destruction of education facilities.

“Over 2,295 teachers have been killed and 19, 000 displaced in Borno, Yobe and Adamawa states in the last nine years. An estimated 1,500 schools have been destroyed since 2014, with over 1, 280 casualties among teachers and students.

“This crisis has further devastated the education system as children, teachers and schools are in the frontline of the conflict.”

To address this, the minister said the Federal Ministry of Education, in collaboration with UNESCO, UNICEF, NGOs, State Directors of Policy, Research and Statistics in the six geo-political zones formulated a policy on Violence Free School for Children in Nigeria to create zero tolerance national culture towards Violence Against Children in education.

“The policy will also promote a learning environment where children are respected, protected and empowered. The policy has been developed, critiqued and is undergoing final statutory processes before distribution to all stakeholders for immediate implementation,” he added.

Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi promised to build a "strong and inclusive" country as the charismatic but polarizing leader swept back to power in the world's largest democracy with an even bigger mandate than he won five years ago.

"Thank you India," the prime minister tweeted. "The faith placed in our alliance is humbling and gives us strength to work even harder to fulfill people's aspirations."

Thank you India! The faith placed in our alliance is humbling and gives us strength to work even harder to fulfil people's aspirations. I salute every BJP Karyakarta for their determination, perseverance & hardwork. They went home to home, elaborating on our development agenda.

His Hindu nationalist Bharatiya Janata Party, or BJP, is on course to win about 300 seats, according to vote counting.

That puts the BJP well past the halfway mark in parliament and would make it the first political party in 35 years to secure a majority twice in a row. Along with its coalition partners, it will have a commanding majority in parliament, which has 543 elected seats.

At a meeting of party workers to celebrate the BJP victory, Modi received a hero's welcome. He flashed victory signs and said his mandate was to build a "new India" and a vote for the country's future.

The results are being seen as a massive vote of confidence in the leadership of Modi, who turned a parliamentary election into a presidential-style contest and defied expectations that rising unemployment and rural distress would erode his support.

Modi campaigned on a platform of strident nationalism after a brief military showdown with Pakistan in February. "He was the central issue of the 2019 election and people wanted to give him another term. Essentially people voted for the prime minister and Narendra Modi," according to independent political analyst Neerja Chowdhury.

The head of the main opposition Congress Party, Rahul Gandhi, conceded the election and congratulated Modi. "Our battle for a different ideological vision of India from the BJP would continue," he said at a brief press appearance. "Today I don't want to color the decision of the people of India and I fully respect it."

While supporters laud Modi's strong leadership and his vision of a more assertive India, his detractors worry that the Hindu nationalist leader has fanned social divisions in the Hindu majority country as Muslims face an increase in hate crimes blamed on fringe Hindu groups.

For electrician Raghubir Gaur in New Delhi, Modi's muscular leadership, his tough stand toward Pakistan and a slew of pro-poor programs made him the undisputed choice. "His vision is to take everybody ahead, whether it is a rickshaw puller, or a street vendor, he wants to create a more equal society."

A former professor at Delhi University, Nandini Guha, worries that "secularism appears to have taken a back seat" during the five-year rule of Modi, whose critics accuse him of divisive politics on the basis of religion. "The divisive factor is possibly the most worrying right now if we want our country to remain as united as it has been all these years."

Stock markets jumped in anticipation of a strong government, which has promised to focus on growing the economy.

As the scale of the BJP sweep became apparent, tweets by senior party leaders called it a "victory for India." Celebrations erupted outside party offices in the country as workers danced, waved flags, beat drums, set off fireworks and gave away candy.

The results show a remarkable turnaround from earlier this year, when losses in local polls in three Hindi heartland bastions raised concerns that perceptions the Modi government failed to deliver on its development promises would pose a challenge in the general elections.

But, it has shrugged aside those concerns and in the national polls the party held its grip on states like Madhya Pradesh and Rajasthan. It also beat back a powerful challenge from two regional parties in the key battleground state of Uttar Pradesh and made inroads in states in eastern India.

Political analysts said the failure of strong leadership from opposition parties also helped the re-emergence of Modi.

The results were a bitter disappointment for the once-dominant Congress Party, which had hoped for its political revival after it was reduced to a mere 44 seats in 2014.

The party has not fared much better this time around — it was securing victories in only 50-plus seats. That will reopen questions about the leadership of Rahul Gandhi, the sixth member of the Nehru-Gandhi political dynasty to lead the party. Gandhi also suffered a humiliating setback as he trailed a BJP minister in the Amethi parliamentary constituency, a bastion of the Nehru-Gandhi political dynasty, which he has represented since 2004.

"Essentially the Congress Party is no match for the Modi-led BJP today, whether it is in terms of the leadership, whether it is in terms of the organization, or strategy," said analyst Chowdhury. "They have to contend with a different element in politics today."

The 68-year-old Modi, who entered politics through a right-wing Hindu nationalist organization, emerged on the national stage five years ago after leading his home state of Gujarat for 13 years.

The mammoth election recorded the highest-ever voter turnout of more than 67 percent.

Falana: How Jammeh ordered execution of nine Nigerians heading to Europe through Gambia

Femi Falana, a senior advocate of Nigeria (SAN), says Yahya Jammeh, ousted Gambian president, ordered the execution of 50 persons, including nine Nigerians, in 2005.

In a statement on Friday, the human rights lawyer said his law firm had been able to identify Omozemoje Paul Enagameh as one of the Nigerians killed by the Jammeh regime.

Following Jammeh’s removal, the Human Rights Watch and TRIAL International had revealed that a paramilitary unit controlled by Jammeh summarily executed Nigerians, Ghanaians and other West African migrants in July 2005.

Gambian officials had told Human Rights Watch that the migrants, who were bound for Europe were suspected of being mercenaries intent on overthrowing Jammeh.

They were murdered after being detained by the former president’s closest deputies in the army, navy, and police.

Falana said his firm found that the nine Nigerians who were involved were traveling with their passports as of the time they were killed.

“On July 21, 2005, the Gambian Navy seized a boat conveying 58 immigrants. Aboard the boat were nine Nigerians, 40 Ghanaians, 3 Senegaleze, 3 Sierra Leoneans and two Togolese sailing towards a fishing vessel anchored on the high sea to stowaway to Europe,” the statement read.

“Apart from two Ghanaian nationals who were released to a Ghanaian government delegation another Ghanaian escaped from the custody of the navy. But the remaining 55 immigrants were illegally executed on the orders of the brutal regime of Mr. Yayah Jameh, former President of Gambia.

“In the investigation conducted by our law firm into the killings it has been established that the 9 Nigerians involved were travelling with their passports. However, the Nigerian Community in Senegal confirmed the identity of one of the massacred Nigerian immigrants. The details are:-

“Name:    Omozemoje Paul Enagameh

Passport No:           A1548206

Place of Birth:         Lagos

Date of Birth:           9th December 1976.”

Thanking Geoffrey Onyeama, minister of foreign affairs, for providing vital information in the investigation, Falana called on family members of the deceased to take opportunity to seek redress in the Truth, Reconciliation and Reparations Commission currently sitting in Banjul, the Gambia capital.

Jammeh, who lost Gambia’s presidential election in 2016, refused to step aside but he bowed to pressure after an intervention leaders of the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS).

He has since been on exile.
