..Calls for stronger legislative independence as assembly marks leadership anniversary
The Minority Leader of the Ogun State House of Assembly and member representing Odogbolu State Constituency, Hon. Lukman Adeleye, has called for stronger legislative independence and improved prioritisation of Assembly resolutions by the executive arm of government.
Hon. Adeleye made the call during a special plenary session held at the Assembly Complex, Oke-Mosan, Abeokuta, to commemorate the second anniversary of the leadership of the 10th Legislature, which ushered in Rt. Hon. Oludaisi Elemide as Speaker.
He stressed the importance of the executive to always look into resolutions and laws passed by the assembly awaiting Mr Governor's assent, saying "time must be created to attend to all these important documents of public interest ".
The opposition leader urged the Speaker to continue to uphold the autonomy of the legislature and resist being a “rubber stamp” for the executive, stressing that effective governance thrives on mutual respect and adherence to the principles of separation of powers.
Hon. Adeleye noted that the anniversary marked not only a change in leadership but also a period of growth, unity and resilience within the Assembly, reaffirming the collective resolve of lawmakers to deliver quality legislative service to the people of Ogun State.
Lawmakers across party lines took turns to commend Rt. Hon. Elemide for his leadership style, describing it as inclusive and transparent, while pledging their continued support for the House.
Speaking at the plenary, the Deputy Speaker and member representing Yewa South State Constituency, Hon. Bolanle Lateefat Ajayi, lauded her colleagues for their unity of purpose and appreciated the Speaker for fostering harmony within the Assembly.
She also acknowledged the support of Governor Dapo Abiodun for the legislative arm, noting that collaboration between the two arms had contributed to stability in governance.
In his remarks, Hon. Adeleye congratulated the Speaker on the milestone, urging lawmakers to sustain the current legislative momentum.
He reiterated the need for the executive to give due attention to resolutions passed by the Assembly in the interest of accelerated development.
The Minority Leader also congratulated Ogun State on its 50th anniversary, paying tribute to the first civilian governor of the state, late Chief Olabisi Onabanjo, for laying a solid foundation for democratic governance.
While commending the current administration led by Prince Dapo Abiodun for its strides in education and industrialisation, Hon. Adeleye called for increased efforts in infrastructural development across the state to further improve the welfare of residents.
Other members of the House equally congratulated the Speaker, reaffirming their commitment to effective representation, good governance and the collective pursuit of policies that would advance the socio-economic development of Ogun State.
