Veteran Nollywood actress Remilekun Oshodi, widely known as Remi Surutu, has revealed the painful online attacks she endured while campaigning for President Bola Ahmed Tinubu during the 2023 general election.
Speaking at the official launch of EKO57, a Lagos-based support group for Tinubu, the actress recounted how social media trolls targeted her personally, even dragging the memory of her late daughter into political criticism.
In a now-viral video from the event, Oshodi said some online users went as far as blaming her daughter’s death on her support for the president.
“I am not scared. I’ve been campaigning for years. During the election period, people insulted me heavily online. Some even said it was the person I was supporting, Asiwaju, who killed my child. But I didn’t let that stop me,” she said.
Despite the backlash, the actress said she remained determined and still went out to cast her vote.
“Your vote is your right. Don’t allow anyone to deceive or intimidate you. When I met B Tinubu, our Baba, he was doing well. If you believe he hasn’t done well, bring someone from your own family to govern Nigeria for just one day, then you will understand what leadership entails,” she said.
Oshodi stressed that she has no plans to withdraw her support for the president, insisting she would continue to campaign and vote for him.
She also addressed what she described as the challenges of political loyalty, noting that some individuals pretend to support a cause only when financial benefits are involved.
According to her, many people fail to appreciate the efforts of political leaders because they judge from a distance without understanding the demands of governance.
The actress lost her first daughter, Ayomikun, in July 2017 after complications from sickle cell disease. Following the tragedy, Oshodi shared heartfelt messages on social media, expressing gratitude to God for the strength to cope with the loss.
She has also spoken publicly about the comfort she finds in her granddaughter, who she says bears a strong resemblance to her late daughter.
Over the years, Oshodi’s resilience and continued contributions to Nollywood have cemented her reputation as one of the industry’s respected veterans.
The EKO57 campaign launch in Lagos also drew several Nollywood personalities, including Yomi Fash Lanso, Ayo Adesanya, and Lege Miami.
Reaffirming her stance, Oshodi said she would not be intimidated by online criticism or threats.
“I am not backing out. I will continue to campaign and vote for him. Anyone trying to scare people should remember that when you walk on the right path with a good heart, nothing will happen to you,” she said.
