‘AGBARA NLA’ HITS ₦354.5M BOX OFFICE MILESTONE, BREAKS NOLLYWOOD RECORDS ABROAD

Nollywood faith-based film Agbara Nla has grossed ₦354.5 million at the Nigerian box office since its cinema release on October 1, marking a major commercial success for the remake of the 33-year-old Christian classic.

The film also generated $120,660 during its opening weekend in selected cinemas in the United Kingdom and Canada, according to its distributor, Nile Entertainment.

In a statement on Tuesday, the distributor announced that three of its films occupied the top three positions at the Nigerian weekend box office, with Agbara Nla leading the chart.

The film grossed ₦47.50 million during the weekend, followed by Street Fighter, which earned ₦36.43 million, while The Other Mummy came third with ₦8.67 million.

The three productions generated a combined ₦92.61 million, representing 58.9 per cent of total weekend box office earnings. Nile Entertainment said its entire film portfolio accounted for 68 per cent of the market’s earnings during the period.

Produced by Mount Zion Film Productions, Sozo Films and Circuits, Agbara Nla is a remake of the original Christian film produced by Mount Zion. Its international distribution in Europe was facilitated through a partnership with IFEC.

Nile Entertainment attributed the film’s impressive performance to a targeted marketing campaign designed to appeal to audiences familiar with the original production, as well as younger moviegoers.

The campaign reportedly included engagement with the Mount Zion community, support from church leaders and online promotions.

According to the distributor, these activities generated more than ₦71 million in advance ticket sales in a single day.

The company also announced that Agbara Nla had achieved several milestones in the United Kingdom, describing it as the biggest Nollywood film release of 2026, the biggest opening weekend for a Nollywood film, the highest advance ticket sales for a Nollywood production and the biggest faith-based Nollywood film release.

The film’s performance highlights the growing commercial potential of faith-based Nigerian cinema, particularly productions that combine established religious audiences with broader theatrical and international distribution strategies.
