SENEGAL SEEKS TO OVERTURN CAF DECISION AWARDING MOROCCO AFCON TROPHY

The Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) has confirmed receiving an appeal from the Senegalese Football Federation challenging the decision that awarded Morocco the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) title.

The appeal targets both the Confederation of African Football (CAF) and the Royal Moroccan Football Federation after CAF’s Appeal Board overturned Senegal’s 1–0 extra-time victory and instead awarded Morocco a 3–0 win. The ruling was based on claims that Senegal breached competition rules during the final at the Prince Moulay Abdellah Stadium.

Senegal is asking CAS to set aside CAF’s decision and recognise it as the rightful AFCON champions. The federation also requested a suspension of procedural timelines pending full disclosure of CAF’s reasoning.

CAS confirmed that an arbitral panel will be constituted to hear the case. Senegal will have 20 days to submit detailed arguments, while CAF and Morocco will be given another 20 days to respond.

The dispute stems from a dramatic final in Rabat, where Senegalese players briefly walked off the pitch after a late penalty decision. Although Senegal later won in extra time, CAF ruled the walk-off violated regulations.

The final ruling from CAS could either restore Senegal’s on-field victory or uphold Morocco’s administrative title.
