The All Progressives Congress (APC) has announced that President Bola Tinubu will not undergo the party’s screening process ahead of the 2027 presidential primaries.
The decision was disclosed on Wednesday by APC National Publicity Secretary, Felix Morka, in a statement posted on X.
According to Morka, the resolution was reached during the 188th meeting of the party’s National Working Committee (NWC), which exercised its constitutional powers to grant waivers in special circumstances.
“This decision was made pursuant to the powers conferred on the NWC under Article 13.4 (xiii) and (xiv) of the Constitution of APC to organise and supervise the Party’s primaries and, in special circumstances, grant waivers, in the best interest of the Party,” the statement read.
The APC said President Tinubu would be considered “duly screened” for participation in the upcoming primary election.
Under the party’s normal procedure, presidential aspirants are expected to appear before a screening committee for verification of credentials and eligibility assessment. The committee also has the authority to approve or disqualify candidates.
The ruling party noted that Tinubu had already undergone screening before the 2022 presidential primaries and argued that requiring him to appear again would be unnecessary.
The NWC also cited what it described as overwhelming endorsements and votes of confidence received by the president from major stakeholders within the party, including the Progressive Governors Forum, members of the National Assembly, and other APC organs during the party’s National Summit held on May 22, 2025.
Although the APC has effectively adopted Tinubu as its preferred presidential candidate, the party is still expected to hold a national convention where his candidacy will be formally ratified.
