The Supreme Court of Nigeria on Thursday delivered two landmark rulings that have significantly altered the leadership crises within the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) and the African Democratic Congress (ADC).
In one decision, the apex court nullified the PDP’s controversial Ibadan national convention held in November 2025, citing blatant disobedience of a subsisting court order. In another, it affirmed the legitimacy of the ADC leadership led by David Mark as National Chairman and Rauf Aregbesola as National Secretary.
PDP plunged into leadership uncertainty
The ruling on the PDP has thrown the party into fresh uncertainty. The court upheld earlier judgments that invalidated the Ibadan convention, stressing that the organisers acted in defiance of a Federal High Court order.
Delivering the lead judgment, Justice Stephen Adah described the action as a “threat to the administration of justice,” warning that disregard for court orders undermines constitutional democracy.
Following the verdict, the PDP’s Board of Trustees, led by Adolphus Wabara, stepped in to assume interim leadership, citing constitutional provisions to prevent a vacuum. The BoT announced plans to convene an emergency National Executive Committee meeting to stabilise the party and appoint an interim leadership structure.
However, divisions persist. A faction aligned with Seyi Makinde insists the party currently lacks a clear leadership, while another bloc loyal to Nyesom Wike claims the judgment validates its authority.
ADC leadership restored
In contrast, the court’s ruling brought clarity to the ADC’s internal crisis by restoring the Mark-led leadership. The court held that an earlier appeal challenging the leadership was incompetent because it was filed without the required leave.
Justice Mohammed Garba explained that the lower court’s “status quo ante bellum” order was merely procedural and did not constitute a ruling that could be appealed as of right.
The ADC welcomed the judgment, describing it as a victory for the rule of law and urging the electoral body to immediately recognise its leadership structure.
Broader political implications
These decisions are expected to reshape political alignments ahead of the 2027 general elections. While the ADC gains stability, the PDP faces the urgent task of resolving its leadership crisis to remain competitive.
The rulings also reinforce a key judicial principle: political parties, despite being voluntary associations, must operate within constitutional limits and obey court orders.
