There are birthdays and then there are milestones that command a standing ovation.
When Chief Reuben Adediran, the Bobare of Gbonganland, turned 80, it was not merely the marking of another year, It was the celebration of a life richly lived, a legacy firmly rooted and a name etched in the history of Gbongan and beyond.
The elegant halls of Radisson Blu Anchorage Hotel, Ikeja came alive as families, friends, associates and well-wishers gathered in grand style to honour the octogenarian. It was an evening wrapped in pomp and pageantry, a fitting tribute to a man whose journey reflects dignity, discipline and devotion.
Clad in regal traditional attire befitting his title, Chief Adediran radiated calm pride as he received guests alongside his beloved wife, Chief Mrs. Idowu Adediran, the Yeye Bobare of Gbongan.
The ambience blended culture and class, rich Yoruba heritage meeting contemporary elegance much like the celebrant himself, deeply traditional, yet remarkably progressive.
Tributes flowed generously. Speakers recalled his humble beginnings at Owoope Compound, Gbongan, born on December 14, 1945, into the respected family of Chief Samuel and Madam Rachael Adediran. As the son of the First Baba Ijo of St. John’s Anglican Church, Gbongan, his early life was shaped by faith, integrity and service, virtues that would define his path.
His professional journey from the former Energy Commission of Nigeria to Lever Brothers Nigeria Plc and later SCOA Nigeria Plc spoke of diligence and enterprise. Retirement did not slow him, it strengthened his resolve as a businessman and Managing Director of Vassacon Ventures Ltd.
Yet beyond corporate success, it is his community impact that resonates most. As President of the Gbongan Progressive Union, Lagos Branch (2010–2014), he strengthened financial systems and championed projects that birthed the Gbongan Recreation Centre, youth remedial programmes and scholarship initiatives for undergraduates, investments that continue to bear fruit.
The conferment of the Bobare title by His Royal Majesty, Oba (Dr) Adetoyese Oyeniyi Odugbemi I in November 2023 was a crowning recognition of decades of quiet but consistent service. And at 80, that honour feels even more profound.
One of the most touching moments of the night came as children and grandchildren gathered around their patriarch for the ceremonial cake cutting, a powerful symbol of four generations united by one man’s values and vision.
Laughter echoed across the hall. Old memories were rekindled. New tributes were written in real time.
At 80, Chief Reuben Adediran stands tall, not only as the Bobare of Gbongan, but as a bridge between tradition and progress, faith and enterprise, leadership and humility.
Indeed, all hail the Bobare at 80, a life of enduring legacies, celebrated in style and sealed with honour.
