Nigerian-American racing sensation Ugo Ugochukwu has made history after being crowned the 2026 FIA Formula 3 Champion, becoming the first American driver to win the prestigious championship.
The 19-year-old sealed the title on Sunday at the newly constructed Madring circuit in Madrid, Spain, after finishing second in the decisive Feature Race for Campos Racing.
Ugochukwu entered the season finale locked in a tense championship battle with British rival Freddie Slater, with the title race going down to the final lap of the campaign.
Finland’s Tuukka Taponen claimed victory in the Madrid Feature Race, but Ugochukwu’s second-place finish proved decisive. Slater could only manage eighth, allowing the Nigerian-American to finish 14 points clear at the top of the championship standings.
Who is Ugo Ugochukwu?
Born in New York, Ugochukwu is a Nigerian-American driver who has rapidly climbed through the junior single-seater ranks with his sights firmly set on Formula 1.
He was previously part of the McLaren Driver Development Programme, where he was identified as one of the young talents with the potential to progress to the pinnacle of motorsport.
In 2026, he competed in FIA Formula 3 with Campos Racing and immediately established himself as a serious championship contender.
He opened his winning campaign with his maiden Formula 3 victory in the Melbourne Feature Race in March before adding another impressive triumph at Silverstone, where he dominated the Sprint Race and crossed the finish line 17 seconds ahead of his rivals.
Dramatic title battle
Ugochukwu's road to the championship was anything but straightforward.
Slater seized control of the title race after the Budapest round in July, defeating Ugochukwu in the Feature Race and opening an eight-point advantage heading into the summer break.
The battle intensified heading into Madrid, with Slater holding a 15-point lead before the final round.
However, Ugochukwu responded when it mattered most. A strong qualifying performance put him in a favourable position, while Slater endured a difficult opening session, setting the stage for a dramatic championship decider.
Ugochukwu kept his composure in the final race, securing second place while Slater finished eighth. The result dramatically swung the championship in his favour and confirmed him as the 2026 FIA Formula 3 champion.
First American to win FIA Formula 3
The triumph places Ugochukwu in the history books as the first driver representing the United States to win the FIA Formula 3 Championship.
His achievement also strengthens his credentials as one of the most promising young drivers on the international motorsport scene.
Several former Formula 3 champions, including Oscar Piastri and Gabriel Bortoleto, have gone on to compete in Formula 1, underlining the importance of the championship as a major pathway to the sport's elite level.
At just 19, Ugochukwu now has an FIA Formula 3 championship to his name and has taken another major step towards his ultimate ambition — Formula 1.
For the Nigerian-American, the 2026 season has transformed a promising title contender into a history-making champion.
