BARCOLA HITS HAT-TRICK AS LIVERPOOL THRASH LASK 6-3

Bradley Barcola silenced his critics with a stunning hat-trick as Liverpool thrashed LASK 6-3 in the UEFA Champions League on Wednesday, ending his goal drought and delivering a timely response to mounting criticism.

The French forward, who joined Liverpool from Paris Saint-Germain for £123 million in August, scored his first goals for the club in his seventh appearance to justify his hefty price tag.

Ronald Araujo opened the scoring in the 22nd minute with a powerful header from Kostas Tsimikas’ corner before Barcola doubled Liverpool’s lead just 96 seconds later.

Barcola struck again in the 37th minute after exchanging passes with Florian Wirtz, giving Liverpool a commanding first-half advantage.

Jeremie Frimpong headed home Tsimikas’ cross in the 51st minute before Barcola completed his treble in the 66th minute, finishing clinically from Frimpong’s pass.

Lewis Koumas added Liverpool’s sixth in the 72nd minute with a fierce strike to register his first Champions League goal.

LASK, however, exposed Liverpool’s defensive frailties late in the game. Robert Ljubicic pulled one back in the 63rd minute, while Florian Flecker struck twice in the closing stages to reduce the deficit.

The victory maintained Liverpool’s perfect Champions League record after their opening win over Atletico Madrid and offered relief following Sunday’s disappointing 3-0 Premier League defeat to Manchester City.

Barcola’s performance was particularly significant after Liverpool manager Andoni Iraola publicly backed him and Wirtz despite criticism over their performances.

With Alexander Isak, Cody Gakpo and Dominik Szoboszlai sidelined by injuries, the pair faced increased responsibility to lead Liverpool’s attack.

While Barcola’s hat-trick provided a major boost, Liverpool’s three conceded goals highlighted defensive problems Iraola must address as the club faces a demanding run of six matches in 18 days.
