At least 17 members of the House of Representatives have defected from the African Democratic Congress (ADC) to the Nigerian Democratic Congress (NDC), in a move that underscores ongoing political realignments ahead of the 2027 general elections.
The development was announced during plenary on Tuesday, when the Speaker of the House, Tajudeen Abbas, read out formal notices of defection from the affected lawmakers.
Mr Abbas also disclosed that Leke Abejide had left the ADC to join the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC).
Those who defected to the NDC include Yusuf Datti, Uchenna Okonkwo, Adamu Wakili, Thaddeus Attah, George Ozodinobi, Lilian Orogbu, Oluwaseyi Sowunmi, Peter Aniekwe, Mukhtar Zakari, George Oluwande and Munachim Umezuruike.
Others are Emeka Idu, Jesse Onuakalusi, Ifeanyi Uzokwe, Afam Ogene and Abdulhakeem Ado.
The wave of defections comes amid internal crises within the ADC and broader efforts by opposition figures to regroup under new political platforms, with the NDC emerging as a potential rallying point for displaced lawmakers and political actors.
