ALL EYES ON LOOKMAN AS ATLÉTICO SET TO CLASH WITH ARSENAL IN UCL SEMI-FINAL

Nigerian forward Ademola Lookman is set for a blockbuster showdown against Arsenal in the semi-finals of the 2025/26 UEFA Champions League after guiding Atlético Madrid into the last four.

Atlético sealed their semi-final return—first since the 2016/17 season—after edging past FC Barcelona 3-2 on aggregate, despite suffering a 2-1 defeat in the second leg on Tuesday.

Meanwhile, Arsenal progressed with a narrow 1-0 aggregate victory over Sporting CP, setting up a high-stakes clash between the Spanish giants and the Premier League side.

Lookman emerged as Atlético’s hero in the quarter-final, delivering a crucial goal in the 31st minute of the second leg. After Barcelona fought back through Lamine Yamal and Ferran Torres to erase a two-goal deficit, the Nigerian forward stepped up to restore Atlético’s aggregate lead—ultimately sealing their place in the semi-finals.

Since his winter move from Atalanta BC, Lookman has hit the ground running, netting 10 goals across all competitions and quickly establishing himself as a key figure in Diego Simeone’s squad.

Looking ahead to the semi-final, Lookman acknowledged the magnitude of the challenge but expressed confidence in his team’s readiness.

“Another strong team, another top team. At this stage, every opponent is tough. It’s a big occasion, and we’re really looking forward to it,” he said.

His strike against Barcelona also places him among an elite group of Nigerians—alongside Obafemi Martins, Samuel Chukwueze, and Victor Osimhen—to have scored in a Champions League quarter-final.

Simeone was full of praise for Lookman’s impact, describing him as a unique attacking force the club has long lacked.

“We’ve never had a player with his kind of qualities. He’s improving defensively, and that makes him even more important,” Simeone said.

He also highlighted Lookman’s pace, courage, and one-on-one ability as key weapons in Atlético’s attacking play, while urging the forward to keep pushing his limits.

“We need even more from him—he still has more to give. We’ve seen it with Nigeria.”
